Just Do What You Do to Me

Constantly, boy you played through my mind like a symphony
There’s no way to describe what you do to me
You just do to me, what you do
And it feels like I’ve been rescued
I’ve been set free
I am hypnotized by your destiny
You are magical, lyrical, beautiful

Devon woke and found coffee waiting.  She didn’t know what time he’d left but knew it was late..or early.. depending on which side you approached from.  Smiling she stood up and stretched.  Tristan had hit her like a ton of bricks.  The last thing she’d been looking for was a gut when she’d walked into the diner.  She’d debated going and only actually ended up there because she was hungry and planned on eating on the way home.  She wandered over to the coffee maker and poured coffee, carried that to the dining room table and opened the anatomy books.  That was when her phone started ringing like crazy.  The Morgue calling.. She shook her head and answered, “My day off.”  Nikki replied, “Missing body.”  Devon sighed and dropped the highlighter, “Damn, I knew I shouldn’t have answered.”  Nikki nodded, “Probably not but you did.. I need you here.”  Devon stood and headed for the bedroom, “All right.  Give me half an hour.”  Nikki smiled, “Okay.  You can tell me about your night when you get here?”

Half an hour later Devon was standing in the cold morgue staring into the drawer where Jane Doe’s body was supposed to be. “Nik, I don’t know where she is.”  Nikki shook her head, “Dev, even the files are gone.  The police are coming and this is going to be a mess.. but from what I can see it wasn’t a break in.” Devon shook her head, “So teenagers playing pranks?”  Nikki nodded, “Probably.  Which means that body may never turn up again or it might be sitting on someone’s porch.”  Nikki frowned and called Ryan, she left a message asking him if any random bodies had turned up.  She knew he’d get back with her at some point.  Devon smiled at Nikki, “So..how was your night?”  Nikki shook her head, “I fell asleep, Ryan came over and I passed out on him.”  Devon took in Nikki’s appearance and smiled, “Well you certainly *look* well rested.”  Nikki smiled, “I am.  It’s the first full night I’ve gotten in a very long time.”  Devon shook her head, “I met Tristan *finally* last night.”  Nikki nodded again, “I heard you were at the diner.”  Devon smiled, “I was and I can see why you liked him.  Which is why I have to ask you this.  Is it going to be a problem if Tristan and I go out.”  Nikki blinked, “You and Tristan?” she smiled, “Of course not.”  Devon watched Nikki closely for her reaction, “I really like him, Nik.  I felt so comfortable with him.  He stayed the night.”  Nikki looked at Devon like she had no clue who the other girl was.  “Oh, come on, I didn’t.. We didn’t…” Devon shook her head, blushing, “Christ.  We made out on my couch like a couple of high school kids.”  Nikki smiled, “He’s a good guy, Devon. A real good guy and I feel like shit for what I did to him.”  Devon looked over at Nikki as she prepped another body, “You should have been honest with him.  Even if it’s going to hurt now, it’ll be a lot less hurt then if it happens later, you know what I mean?  He’s taking me out tonight.”  “I know what you mean.  It was one of those things that I didn’t realize until Ryan was talking about you and everything.”  Devon walked over to where Nikki was working, “I wanted to cave so bad last night.  I just like him way to much for that.  I want him to decide when to move it on.  He’s so.. patient and the way he treats Sangria is great.  They’re so close and he’s respectful and he took me to meet Van and Lia, Oh!  Sangria and Ethan’s bedroom buts up to my living room, they’re the one’s that knocked my tv down.”  Nikki laughed..”Oh.. that’s perfect.”  Devon smiled, “You’re sure you’re okay with it?”  Nikki nodded, “Absolutely.  We’re friends Devon.  It wasn’t meant to happen and it didn’t.  It’s okay.  Ryan told me he loved me.”  Devon smiled at Nikki, “Seriously?  You didn’t know that already?  Everyone else did.  Especially when he walked into the diner and told Tristan what he was going to do.”  Nikki looked up from the Y-incision she was currently stitching back together, and smiled, “I said it back.”  Devon nodded, “Nice.  Now stop working so hard and spend some time with him.”  Nikki stopped what she was doing and looked Devon in the eyes, “I plan on it..but, Kettle, you should really do the same.” Devon laughed, “Point taken, which is why I’m going to go home and study and then I’m going to pamper myself and get ready for my date tonight.  I plan on knocking his socks off.  I might even go visit Splash Panic for a new dress.  If the police need to talk to me they can reach me at home for a while.  Then I’m turning off my cell phone, for the rest of the night and probably tomorrow as well.”  Nikki dropped a stitch, “Wow, you really do like him.”  Devon nodded, “I’m going to marry him someday.”  Nikki back stitched and watched as Devon didn’t wait around for her to respond. When she heard the back door slam she smiled, shook her head and went back to work.

The police arrived shortly after Devon left Nikki told them all she knew and they went through the processes of dusting for prints and the technical stuff.  Nikki waited around for them to finish, locked up the Morgue again and went over to Ryan’s.
