Words are Spaces Between Us – Picking Out the Rings, Lunch at the Diner

Boys:
<After parking Aiden’s car down the street from Splash Panic, the boys get out and head up the block toward the jewelry store>
Boys:
<around lunchtime>
Girls:
<Silver and Saige come out of the Dojo and head to the meeting place, outside the store, Saige looks at David, grins> You’re *sure* you don’t want to go to the Pawn Shop again?
Boys:
<David smiles at Saige> Oh, I thought about it, but.. I’m thinkin’ a second hand ring isn’t gonna quite cut it this time.
Girls:
<Saige smiles at David> No.. you’re probably right.
Girls:
<Silver looks at Aiden, smiles> You ready for this?
Boys:
<Aiden looks at Silver> Believe it or not.. yeah. I am.
Girls:
<Silver nods> Then let’s buy some jewelry guys.
Girls:
<Saige looks over at Samuel>

Boys:
<Samuel looks at Saige, takes a drag of his cigarette, smiles> Don’t look at me, darlin’. I’m not on the endangered species list.
Girls:
<Saige laughs> Babe.. I didn’t say you were.
Girls:
<Silver mutters> Yet.
Boys:
<Conrad looks at Aiden and David> Okay, here’s the way this works. According to the commercials, an engagement ring should cost the same as two months pay. But since you guys don’t get actual paychecks from *real* jobs, I used my paycheck to figure it out for you. You’re lookin’ at dropping around $3000. Do *not* go lower because this isn’t just a symbol of your love and commitment, it’s also a statement of how well you can take care of her, how much she means to you and the standard by which her friends will judge how much or little of an asshole you are and their men are in comparison.
Boys:
<David looks at Aiden> Jesus fuckin’ Christ. Can’t even buy a goddamn ring without special instructions.
Boys:
<Aiden nods> That’s relationships for ya.
Boys:
<Aiden looks at Rad> So, we’re not just buyin’ wives with this rock, but her friends, too?
Boys:
<Conrad smiles> Pretty much. And selling off yours.
Girls:
<Saige looks at Aiden, smiles> That’s a guideline. If you see something that’s *her* and you know it..get it because the sentimentality is bonus.
Boys:
<Aiden laughs, shakes his head> All right, well.. I guess Ava’s worth about 3 grand and all my friends. <looks at Saige, smiles> Right. Got it.
Girls:
<Silver nods> Look at Genja and Eden’s ring.
Girls:
<Silver smiles> And people don’t talk about how much it cost they talk about how it matches her eyes.
Boys:
<Aiden looks at Silver> Babe.. Genja can afford *that* kind of sentimentality.
Boys:
<Aiden looks at Rad> Thing is.. I don’t know if Ava would be comfortable wearin’ a $3000 ring. You know how she is.
Girls:
<Silver smiles> Genja spent all his savings on that ring. and didn’t blink.
Boys:
<Rad smiles> That’s why *I’m* here. <nods to Silver> Yeah, he did.
Girls:
<Saige smiles> Sang said to let you guys know that diamonds aren’t the only stone for rings…that emeralds and sapphires are trending too.
Boys:
<Rad looks at Saige> Ooh. <looks at David and Aiden> There ya go. They’ve both got green eyes, so you could pull off the eye matching bit, too.
Girls:
<Silver smiles>
Boys:
<Aiden shakes his head> You guys can stop acting like we need an engagement ring guide for idiots. <smiles> We’ve cased enough jewelry stores to have *somewhat* of a clue.
Boys:
<David looks at Aiden, smiles> Speak for yourself, man. Only one that gives *me* a clue most days is my aunt Jamie and the last ring I gave a girl, she gave me to give her.
Boys:
<Aiden looks at David, smiles> You’re screwed. <heads inside>
Boys:
<David nods> Probably. <follows him in>
Girls:
<Saige smiles> That’s why *I’m* here and you have your cell phone which has a camera.
Boys:
<Conrad looks at Silver> Let the games begin. <heads inside with the boys, pulling her with him>
Girls:
<Silver smiles> This is gonna be *fun*.
Boys:
<Conrad nods> Or at least interesting.
Girls:
<Silver laughs> Fun… I’m gettin’ yours too.
Boys:
<David and Aiden stop in the middle of the store and look around at all the display cases>
Boys:
<Conrad looks at Silver> I thought you were joking.
Girls:
<Silver smiles> I am baby.
Boys:
<Conrad smiles, leans over and kisses her>
Boys:
<Samuel looks at Saige> Go on in and make sure he doesn’t get lost. I’m gonna finish my cigarette.
Girls:
<Saige goes with David>
Boys:
<David frowns looking at all the jewelry> Huh.
Girls:
<Saige walks up to David, whispers> I’m here..<takes his hand, squeezes it> Over here.
Boys:
<Aiden looks at David, smiles, grabs him by the back of the neck lightly, pulls him toward the clerk> Come on. <walks over to the clerk, looks at him> Show us the engagement rings you have under $3500.
Boys:
<David looks at Saige as Aiden pulls him away, pulls her with them, grins> You gonna be my shotgun bride again for this one?
Girls:
<Saige smiles at David> You know it.
Boys:
<The clerk looks at Aiden and David skeptically because he doesn’t believe either one of them has that kind of money to drop on a ring, shows them over to the selection of rings in the stated price range>
Boys:
<Aiden looks at David and Saige> Feels kinda weird puttin’ a number on it.
Girls:
<Saige smiles> Then don’t. Look around and see what you see and like.
Boys:
<David looks at the rings in the case> Taryn’s gonna want somethin’ that’s not too big and doesn’t get in her way when she’s workin’ with the horses.
Boys:
<Aiden nods to Saige> And Ava’s gonna want somethin’ that’s not gonna break her scrawny little finger.
Boys:
<Conrad walks over to Aiden and David, looks at Aiden> Ava would be happy with the top of a soda can and you know it.
Girls:
<Saige smiles at Aiden, looks at the Jeweler> We’re gonna look around for a few minutes.
Girls:
<Silver smiles and heads over> So Taryn’s gonna want something bezel set and possibly cushion cut.
Boys:
<Aiden nods, takes a breath, closes his eyes for a second>
Boys:
<David looks at Silver> I have no idea what you just said.
Girls:
<Silver points out something in the case that’s diamond, but set deep into the ring so the edges aren’t showing> That’s bezel set and <points out another ring that’s flat on top but the fire is blazing from the cuts below> That’s cushion cut.
Girls:
<Saige walks over to Aiden, lays a hand on his arm> Babe, I have one question for you…traditional or not?
Boys:
<David looks at the rings> Huh. Okay. <looks at Silver> She’s more into practical shit. Nothin’ flashy or.. pretentious. Somethin’ that doesn’t cost more than a good horse, because she’d probably not like the idea of me just throwin’ money away on a piece of jewelry that coulda fed the foals for a week or somethin’.
Boys:
<Aiden puts a finger to his lips> Shhh.
Boys:
<Conrad looks at Aiden curiously> What are you doing?
Girls:
<Saige nods>
Boys:
<Aiden opens his eyes after a couple of seconds, looks at Conrad> I was thinkin’ about my woman and all the shit we been through. <looks at Saige> Not traditional. Her sister’s the formal, stuffy one. Ava’s should have some color.
Girls:
<Silver looks over at Aiden, then goes back to David> All right… so here’s the thing.. look around, if you find something that you like that you think will suit her we’ll ask to see it.
Girls:
<Saige smiles> All right.. something with color…what color are you thinking?
Boys:
<Conrad smiles> White gold so it looks silver to people who aren’t real up on it. Especially around our neighborhood. Get her an eternity ring. The ones with the diamonds in the bands. <smiles> Tell her there’s one for every fight you’ve had. Emeralds will match her eyes.
Boys:
<Aiden smiles, looks at Saige > What do you think?
Boys:
<Conrad smiles> And the emeralds are for every time you’ve made up.
Girls:
< Saige smiles> Emeralds and Diamonds, one for …yes.
Girls:
< Saige looks at Aiden and if we can find lighter emeralds to match her eyes even better.
Boys:
<Aiden looks at Conrad> No. The emeralds will be for the fights and the diamonds for the makin’ up. <nods to Saige > Then let’s do it.
Boys:
<Samuel walks in after finishing his cigarette, walks over to Aiden> Know what you’re lookin’ for?
Boys:
<Aiden nods> Emerald and diamond eternity ring. <tells him the rest>
Boys:
<Samuel smiles> The color of envy. Nice.
Girls:
<Saige looks over the rings and spots the eternity bands> Over here.
Boys:
<Aiden looks over, heads over with Rad>
Boys:
<Samuel walks over to David, leaving Aiden to Rad and Saige>
Boys:
<David look at Samuel> Whaddya think?
Boys:
<Samuel looks in the case, shrugs> I think a lot of ’em are pretty goddamn pretentious. Not simple enough.
Boys:
<David breathes, smiles> Me too.
Boys:
<Samuel looks at him, smiles> So let’s find her somethin’ simple.
Boys:
<David nods> And that’s not gonna break or jar the stone while she’s training.
Boys:
<David looks back at the rings, points out an 18 Kt. diamond solitaire three prong with a .90 kt round diamond, the band thin and curving into the diamond> Think she’d like that one?
Boys:
<Samuel smiles> Well, the thing about that one is, it looks kinda soft, like her. But in a good way. And she can always put the rock on a different band later if she wants.
Boys:
<David nods, looks over at Saige> Saige, come here a minute.
Girls:
<Saige walks over to David> Find something?
Boys:
<David points out the ring> What do ya think?
Girls:
<Saige smiles> Oh.. it’s pretty..it looks almost fragile.
Boys:
<David smiles> Yeah. Think she’d like it?
Girls:
<Saige nods and smiles> Yeah.. I do.
Boys:
<David nods> All right then.
Boys:
<Samuel pulls Saige away from the counter, leaving David to deal with the purchase, whispers> He’s more scared than Aiden.
Girls:
<Saige shakes her head and whispers> Why’s he scared?
Boys:
<Samuel smiles> H doesn’t wanna fuck it up. It’s the ring he’s hopin’ she’ll be wearin’ the rest of her life.
Girls:
<Saige smiles> He could give her a piece of glass and she’d wear it, like it was the crown jewels.
Boys:
<Samuel smiles, nods> I know.
Girls:
<Saige looks at him, grins> I’ve got this.
Boys:
<Samuel looks at her> Got what, darlin’?
Girls:
<Saige shrugs> A way to ease his..nerves.
Boys:
<Samuel nods>
Girls:
<Saige heads back over to David, grins> So ask him to bring it out, baby.
Boys:
<David looks at Saige, arches a brow when she calls him baby, looks at the clerk> You heard her.
Boys:
<the clerk looks at Saige, pulls the ring out of the case>
Girls:
<Saige smiles stunningly at the clerk> Thank you. <takes the ring and holds it out to David, grins> Practice.
Boys:
<David takes the ring, looks at it, looks at her, smiles> Practice? <shakes his head, starts to say something, looks at her, smiles gain, adopts the hick accent> Lerlene, would you do me the honor of bein’ my bride?

Girls:
<Saige laughs, and falls into the hick accent as well> You know I will Billy Bob.. what with the bun in the oven and all. Mah Daddy’d shoot ya if I didn’t.
Boys:
<Conrad smiles, listening to them, looks at Silver> So *that’s* how it’s done.
Boys:
<David laughs, shakes his head, hands it back to the clerk> Box it up, man. I gotta get the little filly home.
Girls:
<Silver laughs> That’s great.
Girls:
<Saige smiles, stands on her toes and kisses David’s cheek> Congrats, babe.
Boys:
<David smiles, leaning into the kiss> Thanks, babe. But save it for after Taryn sees it.
Boys:
<the clerk takes the ring and the eternity ring Aiden picked for Ava, boxes them and rings them up>
Boys:
<Conrad looks at Silver thoughtfully>
Girls:
<Saige smiles> You know when you’re doin’ it yet?
Boys:
<David looks at Saige, smiles> Um.. as soon as we get home?
Girls:
<Silver smiles>
Girls:
<Saige smiles> Or you could save it and Do that song for her and do it tonight at the show?
Boys:
<David nods> I could. But.. I don’t know if I can wait that long.
Girls:
<Saige nods> Whatever you think’s best. She’s gonna love it no matter what you do and she’s gonna love that.
Boys:
<David looks at her> Oh, best has nothin’ to do with it. I just wanna get it on her finger.
Boys:
<Samuel smiles> That ring’s gonna be burnin’ a hole in his pocket til he does.
Girls:
<Saige smiles.. yeah it will.
Boys:
<Conrad smiles at Silver> I’m thinkin’ *you’d* need a ring that’s at least a *little* flashy. Like you.
Girls:
<Silver looks at him, grins> I might. <smiles> Somthin’ catch your eye?
Boys:
<Conrad smiles at her> Other than you?
Girls:
<Silver smiles, leans in and whispers> I love you.

Boys:
<Conrad leans into her, whispers back> I love you, too.
Girls:
<Silver closes her eyes and hugs him fiercely>
Boys:
<Conrad hugs her back>
Boys:
<David takes the ring box and puts it in his pocket, heads outside with Samuel and lights a cigarette> So’d Bree come and talk to you?
Boys:
<Samuel lights a cigarette, looks down the street> Ayup.
Girls:
<Saige looks at Samuel>
Girls:
<After following the boys out>
Boys:
<David nods> Me and Taryn had a little talk with her. About everything she *wasn’t* gonna say. Taryn told her she needed to make things right with you if she wanted a fresh start.
Boys:
<Samuel nods> That explains that.
Boys:
<David looks at him> What’d she say?
Boys:
<Samuel shakes his head, takes another drag> Some shit that totally contradicted what Dee had to say. <looks at him> Yanno.. the usual.
Boys:
<David smiles> Let me guess. “Fuck her”?
Boys:
<Samuel shrugs> Says she’s different now, blah, blah, blah.
Girls:
<Saige listens, and watches them>
Boys:
<Conrad, Silver and Aiden come out of the shop, the boys lighting their cigarettes, Aiden looks at them> Who’s hungry? <nods toward the diner> It’s about that time.
Girls:
<Silver smiles> I’m starved.
Boys:
<David nods to Aiden> I could eat. <grins> Somethin’.
Boys:
<Conrad laughs> Nice try, man.
Boys:
<David smiles, shakes his head> I was tryin’ not to go there.
Girls:
<Silver smiles> Uh huh.
Boys:
<David smiles at Silver> What? I was. I might be the baddest boy in town, but.. it’s a small goddamn town and now you guys are here. Make me look like a goddamn puppy.
Boys:
<Samuel smiles, ruffles David’s hair> Come on, then, pup. Let’s get somethin’ to eat. <heads across the street>
Boys:
<Aiden smiles at David> What? Taryn take the bite outta you?
Boys:
<David shakes his head> Depends on why I’m bitin’. <heads after Samuel>
Girls:
<Saige laughs> Oh my god.. you did not just go there.
Girls:
<Silver looks at Rad>
Boys:
<Rad looks at Silver, smiles>
Boys:
<Samuel looks back at Saige> Who you talkin’ to, woman?
Girls:
<Saige arches a brow at Samuel> My brother in law.

Boys:
<David looks back at Saige, smiles> Where’d I go that was so bad?

Girls:
<Saige laughs> Nowhere babe.
Boys:
<David smiles again, nods, heads across the street with Samuel, Aiden and Conrad follow and go into the diner>
