I’ve Gotta Ride Like the Wind to be Free Again – Taryn and Tristan Argue

Girls:
{Taryn walks out of the apartment shutting the door behind her}
Boys:
{Akhiro and Tristan look at Taryn, Tristan} How’d it go?
Girls:
{Taryn shrugs} Okay. {looks at Tristan} Why’d you do it Tristan?
Boys:
{Tristan shakes his head} Tar.. {looks at her} Because he was getting too close too fast.
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} And by that, I really meant.. because I don’t want to lose you.
Boys:
{Akhiro looks at Sang, rolls his eyes}
Girls:
{Taryn shakes her head} Tristan.. I’m not going anywhere. {looks over at Akhiro and Sangria}
Boys:
{Akhiro looks at Taryn} We’re going in now.
Girls:
{Taryn smiles} Thanks .. Renee could probably stand to be rescued. I told Loch to “get out.”
Boys:
{Akhiro smiles} No problem. {grabs Sang’s hand and pulls her back into the apartment with him}
Girls:
{Sangria goes}
Boys:
{Tristan watches them go, looks at Taryn} I’m only going to say this once but only because I’m really tired of repeating it. I trust *you*.
Girls:
{Taryn shakes her head} I know you do. I trust you too, but talking to David, while I appreciate what you were doing.. it pisses me off. We’re friends.
Boys:
{Tristan shakes his head} You’ve only been friends for two days, Tar.
Girls:
{Taryn shakes her head} And during that time I dropped something important in his lap.
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} What could be so important that it erases ten years of hostility and makes him the most important person in your life suddenly?
Girls:
{Taryn blinks} He’s *not* the most important person in my life Tristan. But {sighs} I’m going to tell you but you can’t tell anyone else. No one else knows but he and I and now you.
Boys:
{Tristan nods} So, tell me.
Girls:
{Taryn quietly} I was pregnant when he left back in high school. He didn’t know and the day he never came back was the day I was going to tell him.. I never got the chance because some ranch hand told him he had a nice family when he saw Tommy and I playing.
Boys:
{Tristan blinks} *You* were pregnant?
Girls:
{Taryn nods} Yes.. I was.
Boys:
{Tristan, still surprised as shit} By *him*?
Girls:
{Taryn nods} Yeah.
Boys:
{Tristan gives her a long look, shakes his head} Fucking perfect. {looks at her} You’re pissed at *me* for telling him to stay away from my girlfriend and you were knocked up by him? Really?
Boys:
{Tristan crosses his arms over his chest} And *I’m* in the wrong here?
Girls:
{Taryn looks at him, shakes her head} You don’t have to worry Tristan. I’m not with him and I haven’t been I’m with *you*
Boys:
{Tristan nods} Which is pretty much what I told him. What *I* want to know is why the hell, after *ten* years, you felt you had to tell him he knocked you up *now*.

Girls:
{Taryn looks at him} Because he deserved to know.
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} “Deserved”? Why did he “deserve” to know you were pregnant ten years ago? If he’s got a kid running around *now*, yeah, he should know. If you were pregnant by him *now*, he should know. But telling him ten years later is like.. I’m not saying this is what you were doing, but it *could* seem like you were only telling him to get a jab in. “Oh, by the way, asshole, when you abandoned me, I was pregnant with your kid”.
Girls:
{Taryn blinks} No.. he deserved to know because it was his kid, and I needed to know that I made the right decision for us when I made it.
Boys:
{Tristan shakes his head} And you’ve had ten years to ask him. Why *now*?
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} I guess I’m just trying to get my head around the “I needed to know I made the right decision for *us*” part.
Girls:
{Taryn looks at him} I made that decision alone. I went through everything alone. {sighs} I thought when he ran that was the reason why, Tristan. I thought some how he’d found out.
Boys:
{Tristan nods} So.. you had to do it for your own piece of mind.
Girls:
{Taryn nods} Partially.. yes, and I know how selfish that is.
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} So.. ten years later, you’re still hurt enough and fucked up over him leaving enough that you had to find out why. Is that what you’re telling me? After ten years of hostilities.. {shakes his head} Ten years later and you were *still* hostile over it. {looks at her again} What else do I need to know about you and David, Taryn?
Girls:
{Taryn looks at Tristan} Nothing. {shakes her head} I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have even told you.
Boys:
{Tristan arches his brow} You shouldn’t have told me?
Boys:
{Tristan shakes his head} You’re right. You *shouldn’t* have told me because now I’m even more convinced that telling him to stay the hell away from you was a good idea.
Girls:
{Taryn looks at him} Fine. He’s my business partner Tristan, a friend and we work together.
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} What’s your point?
Girls:
{Taryn arches her brow} He’s not going to be able to “stay the hell away from me”
Boys:
{Tristan nods} He was doing a pretty decent job of it today. {looks at her} Went and got himself a new girlfriend and everything. So, are you telling me he won’t be able stay away from you because you’re friends and working together and all the other shit or are you telling me you won’t *let* him? Like you didn’t let him tonight.
Girls:
{Taryn looks at him} Jesus Tristan. Are you really that threatened by him? *Why*? You didn’t go balls out over Van or Ethan’s comment about my ..my.. top coming off.
Boys:
{Tristan arches a brow} Which is entirely different than this. I didn’t go balls out over *David’s* comment either. What do you want me to do, Taryn? Just sit by and watch with my thumb up my ass while you’re running to his rescue and getting fucked up with him and.. don’t even get me started on the piggy back ride. Thinking about all that and factoring in the fact he’s your ex boyfriend *and* he knocked you up, can you really *not* see why this should be a problem for me?
Boys:
{Tristan places his hands on his hips} Christ.. if I’d done nothing you’d be saying I didn’t give a fuck.
Girls:
{Taryn looks at him} So you’re holding all of Leesburg against me. {nods} I can see it yes.. I just don’t understand why you think No isn’t in my vocabulary. And No I wouldn’t be saying that, because I *know* you do.
Boys:
{Tristan looks confused} All of Leesburg? What the fuck are you even talking about?
Girls:
{Taryn looks at him} You told me I’m not allowed to get high, you have a problem with me just playing around, Oh.. and I’m only supposed to have fun on the weekends.
Boys:
{Tristan shakes his head} I told you I didn’t want you getting high because of your training and you *said* you were fine with that. {looks at her} So, what? Now I’m a controlling bastard? You’re going to hold something against me that you said you were okay with? Really? Do you even realize that a guy like David has probably had like.. twenty or so women tell him the same shit you did about being knocked up? {looks at her} Hell, he’s probably got kids all over the state he doesn’t even know about.
Girls:
{Taryn blinks} I didn’t say you were a controlling bastard and I’m fine with not getting high. I can take it or leave it and usually prefer to leave it. And here’s something. .You *told* me. And No I didn’t realize that he probably had kids all over the state.
Boys:
{Tristan nods} Why are you with me?
Girls:
{Taryn looks at him} Because you’re sweet and gentle. And you’re strong and know what you want. Because I love you. I love look in your eyes when we’re together, I love the way you smile when you think no one is watching you, like you have a secret. I love the way you can with a simple word or glance make me want to do anything to make you laugh. The way you hold me, the way you aren’t afraid to be vulnerable. Because while we have things in common we don’t have *everything* in common, and because you did take a risk.
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} Then why is it so hard for you to let him go?
Boys:
{Tristan shakes his head} Don’t answer that. That’s not even what I’m asking you to do.
Girls:
{Taryn looks at him} Then what are you asking?
Boys:
{Tristan shakes his head} It doesn’t matter.
Girls:
{Taryn looks at him} If it doesn’t matter then why are you with me.
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} I wasn’t saying *that* didn’t matter, Taryn. I just don’t want to fight about this anymore. And I’m sorry if I *told* you but yanno, I don’t know what you want from me. This whole week we’ve been fucking around, it’s been all “master” this and “master” that and you were all about me “telling” you. So, I’m sorry if I didn’t realize I was supposed to *ask*.
Boys:
{Tristan shakes his head} Actually.. I shouldn’t have had to ask *or* tell or anything else. {looks at her} You don’t get high. You haven’t since high school. I thought we had *that* in common.
Girls:
{Taryn blinks} Wow.. because I have no idea what you want from me. I mean I thought you wanted that. *One* time.. Tris. That’s all it was. And I hadn’t planned on that or doing it again.
Boys:
{Tristan takes a breath} For ten years, you’ve been straight edge. {looks at her} You hang out with David *once* and you come back high. Yes. What does that say to me, Taryn?
Boys:
{Tristan shakes his head} I never said I wanted that from you. *Ever*. *You* wanted me to show you. You had no right assuming that’s what I was about and not asking me when *you* asked *me* for it.
Girls:
{Taryn looks down} Because I had people telling me to loosen up. That I was wound too tightly, he offered it and I thought what the hell. {Closes her eyes} You’re right I didn’t.
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} I’m with you *because* you’re who you are. I just didn’t realize who you are changed based on who you were with. I guess because I’ve never seen you do that before. Because for years, while everyone else was getting high, you weren’t. Because while everyone else was getting fucked up and calling out of work the next day, you were still up at the crack of god’s ass every morning working on the ranch. You’re responsible and level headed and comitted and.. I don’t know.. driven. Disciplined. One day with David and you’re throwing all that away. One week with me and you’re letting everyone else tell you what to do.
Boys:
{Tristan nods} So.. yeah. I had a problem with it. I have a problem with the influence he has over you. Especially because of who he is. I’m not apologizing for that.
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} While I was *telling* you what you weren’t allowed to do last ight, I also told you not to do shit just because you thought it was what other people wanted.
Girls:
{Taryn looks up at him, quietly} I’m still disciplined and responsible. One time getting high doesn’t change that.
Boys:
{Tristan nods} And I never said it did. {looks at her} I was telling you I didn’t like it and why. I don’t care that you got high *once*, Tar. I told you that. {shakes his head again} I thought *talking* to you about it was what I was supposed to do as opposed to just keeping my mouth shut about shit that was bothering me. {looks at her} And you throwing it back in my face after we talked about it and resolved it wasn’t just a dick move, it was a David move. If you had a problem with me *telling* you, you should’ve told me. You should’ve talked to *me* about it like I talked to you.

Girls:
{Taryn looks down and shakes her head} You are supposed to talk to me about it. I wasn’t throwing it in your face.
Boys:
{Tristan nods} That’s what it sounded like to me.
Girls:
{Taryn quietly} Then I’m sorry.
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} Me, too.
Girls:
{Taryn quietly} You didn’t do anything to be sorry for.
Boys:
{Tristan shakes his head} I pissed you off and I was controlling. I got that.
Girls:
{Taryn shakes her head, softly} It wasn’t intentional.
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} I think we need to reevaluate our relationship. And I’m not saying I want to take a break or anything because I don’t. I just think we had the wrong expectations about each other and who we are and maybe we need to really look at things and readjust those expectations.
Boys:
{Tristan shakes his head} I think we moved too fast and we haven’t taken any time to get to know each other and I want us to.
Girls:
{Taryn looks at him and blinks}
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} I’m not breaking up with you but I *do* think we need to slow things down and spend less time fucking and more time just.. being together.
Girls:
{Taryn nods, her chin trembling} Okay.
Boys:
{Tristan shakes his head} Baby… I’m not saying I don’t want to be with you. I do.
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} I don’t want us to be David and Aubrey.
Girls:
{Taryn quietly} I know.. I heard what you said. {looks away from him} We aren’t them.
Boys:
{Tristan watches her} So why are you upset?
Girls:
{Taryn looks down} Because in one breath you’re telling me all the ways I’m not who you thought I was and in the next you’re telling me we need to reevaluate our relationship. Slow things down. {shakes her head} The only thing worse then that is.. “I need some space.”
Boys:
{Tristan shakes his head} You’re not who I thought you were. You’re right. {looks at her} That was *my* mistake, not yours. *I* got that wrong. Those were *my* assumptions. But even Sang said she hasn’t really heard about us talking about anything other than fucking and when, where and how we’re going to it.
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} I want us to have more than that. To *be* more than that.
Girls:
{Taryn looks at him} So do I. So how am I not what you thought?
Boys:
{Tristan takes a breath} I thought you’d make me work for it. Actually put some effort into *us* before you’d… {shakes his head} No. I thought we’d be more.. I don’t know.. grown up about it? I thought we’d get to know each other better. Connect emotionally first. Progress a little more.. {sighs} Fuck. Akhiro was right. {looks at her} I think you’re beautiful and your body is amazing and you get me hard just walking around. But everyone already knows that. I’ve said it enough that even *I’ve* started thinking I sound like the sex is all I’m thinking about. And I don’t like that. I didn’t think you’d give it up so easily and if I’m going to continue being brutally honest I have to say I wish you hadn’t.
Girls:
{Taryn blinks and nods, closes her eyes}
Boys:
{Tristan shakes his head, looks at his feet} Can we just start over?
Girls:
{Taryn quietly} How? Where do we start over from? In general or tonight?

Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} Taryn, *talk* to me. Because right now I feel like a *huge* asshole.
Girls:
{Taryn looks at him} Don’t. Because you’re right. I let all the talk get to me and I shouldn’t have.
Boys:
{Tristan nods} Okay. So what does that mean?
Girls:
{Taryn quietly} I wasn’t going to sleep with you that night.. but everyone was talking about it and your slutty ways and {looks down again} I let it get to me. I wanted to.. I’d wanted to for a while. It’s just.. I’m not that person.
Boys:
{Tristan shakes his head} I didn’t expect it, Taryn. {looks at her} I didn’t expect it for a while. And I was okay with that. I told you I wanted something more meaningful and I meant it. I still want that.
Girls:
{Taryn looks at him} And because I did.. I may have fucked us. I know you didn’t expect it.. but *I* tweaked. I got scared.

Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} Why did you get scared?
Girls:
{Taryn quietly} I didn’t want to lose you before we were even together.
Boys:
{Tristan shakes his head} Why would you think that? {looks at her} And why would you think fucking me to keep me around was a *good* idea?
Girls:
{Taryn looks down and shrugs} I don’t know. Christ Tris.. It’s all they were talking about. Then there was Saige. I don’t know.
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} Yeah. Saige who I broke things off with for you. To be with *you*. I wasn’t going anywhere, Taryn. I wanted to be with you for so long it’s ridiculous. I was half in love with you already. The only reason it took me so long to ask you out was because I thought you knew about me and Saige and didn’t think you’d be cool with getting with a guy that fucked your sister.
Girls:
{Taryn nods} I know you broke things off with her for me. I also know it wasn’t a rational response. It happened and there’s nothing I can do to change it now. I mean.. even you said you were being a good boy. {shakes her head} It made me feel like a little girl. Like you were only “being a good boy” because I was so naïve.
Girls:
{Taryn looks at him} So I went the other extreme with it.
Boys:
{Tristan shakes his head} I’m sorry. That’s not what I meant at all. {looks at her} I meant.. and should have said.. that I was behaving myself out of respect for you.
Girls:
{Taryn looks at him} Tris..
Boys:
{Tristan shakes his head again} Hell.. I didn’t even know you were “naive”. I just thought.. you were.. you know..
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} What?
Girls:
{Taryn sighs} Inexperienced? I am.. was.. Fuck. I don’t even know. {shakes her head} I don’t want you to be sorry.
Boys:
{Tristan sighs} No. I thought you were a good girl. And I’m not saying I don’t think you are now. Even if David’s the only other guy you’ve been with, I wouldn’t think you were naive or inexperienced *because* I know David like I do.
Girls:
{Taryn quietly} We were teenagers and fucking in haylofts and haystacks.
Boys:
{Tristan nods} I know, but.. still.
Girls:
{Taryn looks at him, quietly} How do we fix this? How do I fix it?
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} I don’t know. But I’m gonna figure it out, okay?
Girls:
{Taryn shakes her head} No. We will.
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} All right. We will.
Girls:
{Taryn walks over to him} I don’t want to fuck us up.
Boys:
{Tristan reaches out and takes her hands, looks at her} Me either.
Girls:
{Taryn squeezes his hands} I’m sorry I made those assumptions about you and what you wanted, and I’m sorry I didn’t make you work for it.
Boys:
{Tristan smiles} I’m sorry I pissed you off with this thing with David. And that I didn’t say something sooner.
Girls:
{Taryn nods and smiles} I’m also sorry that I put you in a place where you felt you had to do that.
Boys:
{Tristan shakes his head} Look.. can we just stop talking about the David thing now?
Girls:
{Taryn nods} Yes.
Boys:
{Tristan smiles} All right. So.. I think I’ve had enough excitement tonight.
Girls:
{Taryn nods} Me too.
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} So.. I’ll take you home?
Girls:
{Taryn nods} Yes please.
Boys:
{Tristan looks at her} Are we okay?
Girls:
{Taryn looks up at him, nods} Yes. We are.
Boys:
{Tristan nods} All right. I’m going to go let Sang and Akhiro know we’re heading out.
Girls:
{Taryn nods} All right. I’ll come say good bye.
Boys:
{Tristan nods, takes her hand and heads back inside with her}
Girls:
{Taryn goes with him}
Girls:
{the girls look over when Tristan and Taryn come into the room}
