In Between the Wrong and the Right – The Locals Try a New Perspective and a New Game, Aiden Picks Up a Waitress

Boys:
<Loch watches David go> Damn, David. Tell us how you *really* feel.
Girls:
<Aubrey looks at Loch> You know what sucks about it?
Boys:
<Loch looks at Aubrey> He’s right?
Girls:
<Aubrey nods>
Boys:
<Loch smiles> But it’s good to see him back, isn’t it?
Girls:
<Aubrey smiles and nods> Yeah it is.
Boys:
<Ethan sighs> I’m not sure Taryn would agree with that right now.
Girls:
<Saige shrugs> She’s pissed at me for outing her.
Boys:
<Loch looks at Ethan> I don’t know, man. Samuel *is* his brother and I’m thinkin’ it’s gotta be pretty hard listenin’ to people say all this shit about him and keepin’ his mouth shut.
Boys:
<Ethan looks at Saige> How’d you out her? I must’ve missed that in all the.. everything.
Girls:
<Saige looks at Ethan> Because I told him she told me to be careful around Samuel.
Boys:
<Ethan blinks> That was about Taryn? Why did I think that was about Jamie?

Girls:
<Saige shrugs> Dunno.
Boys:
<Loch looks at Saige> I’m not sure that “be careful around Samuel” was exactly bad advice. We *don’t* know him that well and he’s obviously capable of shit we aren’t. That’s not the same as “be crazy paranoid about him”.
Girls:
<Saige nods> Still.. <shrugs> When have you ever known me to be careful?
Boys:
<Van looks at the others> I think David was hoping we’d come around on our own and he wouldn’t have to get in the middle of it and risk pissing anyone off or choosing sides.
Boys:
<Akhiro nods> I’d say that’s a damn good bet. His brother who he hasn’t seen in ten years versus his friends who he’s with every day.
Boys:
<Loch nods> And that’s a shitty choice to have to make no matter who you are.
Girls:
<Renee looks at them> Sang and I had pretty much come to the decision we were gonna give him a chance…<looks at Sang> see what happened. You know.
Boys:
<Loch looks at Ren> Well. That’s mighty white of us, isn’t it?
Boys:
<Ethan shakes his head> That’s a decision you had to have a discussion about to reach. But they’re the assholes. <looks at Ren> And by that, I mean we’re *all* assholes for that one.
Boys:
<Brennan shakes his head> No fuckin’ wonder David kept his family from us for so long.
Girls:
<Renee looks at Loch, then at Ethan> No Ethan.. we were talking and ..<shakes her head> never mind.
Boys:
<Ethan looks at Ren> What I’m saying is that’s something we *all* should’ve just done naturally.
Girls:
<Sangria looks at Siobhan, quietly> I’m beginning to think head down mouth shut *is* the way to go.
Boys:
<Van nods> *Especially* because he’s David’s brother. <looks at them> If nothing else, David wouldn’t put Taryn or that ranch in danger.
Girls:
<Siobhan looks at Sangria and nods>
Girls:
<Saige looks at Van> He wouldn’t.. he wouldn’t put any of us in danger.
Boys:
<Van looks at Saige> Exactly. So, now I’m wondering how much we trusted *him*.
Girls:
<Sangria looks at Van and blinks> No.. trusting David wasn’t the issue. At least not for me.
Boys:
<Van looks at Sang> But not one of us stopped and said, yanno what? David thinks he’s safe enough to have him around Taryn at the ranch. You know what I mean?
Girls:
<Sangria nods> I do…
Boys:
<Loch shakes his head> No. I’ll tel you what’s fucked up. Taryn walkin’ around acting like he’s her new big brother and then goin’ behind his and David’s back and tellin’ Saige, essentially, that she doesn’t trust him.
Girls:
<Saige looks at Van> I didn’t even consider that. <looks at them> I think we all got caught up in the stories.. and the danger.
Girls:
<Saige looks at Loch> With *me*.
Boys:
<Van nods to Saige> I don’t think any of us considered much of anything beyond the stories.
Boys:
<Loch looks at Saige> That’s not the point, Saige. The point is, she felt like that at all but pretended she didn’t.
Boys:
<Ethann looks at Loch> You’re assuming David didn’t know she felt that way. We don’t know that.
Boys:
<Loch nods> All right. So, she’s scared of him and tellin’ Saige to be careful and cozying up to him to stay on his good side.
Girls:
<Saige shakes her head> I don’t think she’s pretending so much as *trying*. <looks at Ethan> She did tell David he made her nervous. Which for Tar is very telling. All of this also happened before dinner.. she spent dinner talking to both of them.
Boys:
<Loch looks at Saige> Babe.. she spent half the time in Matoako talkin’ to Samuel. Hasn’t changed shit.
Girls:
<Saige shrugs> So maybe her opinion changed.. I also spent the day with them. All I’m saying is maybe she’s warming up to him.
Girls:
<Sang looks at Loch> You know it’s not like Taryn to do something like that.
Boys:
<Loch shakes his head> We showed up at his house. Took it over. Started makin’ decisions about what was gonna happen to *his* mother. Accused him of plotting to kill her and burn down the house. <looks at Saige, then Sang> And *we* act like he’s intruding on *our* lives?
Girls:
<Saige shrugs> Maybe she’s having a hard time letting go of that first impression with the bad vibes. Which I’m thinking were more the place than the person.
Girls:
<Saige nods in agreement with Loch>
Boys:
<Seth nods> And if he’s the guy we’re so sure he is.. why the hell are we still here to talk about it? Because I’m thinkin’ most of those good old boys up there would’ve gone through that house with a shotgun while we were taking our naps and blown our heads off in our sleep.
Girls:
<Sang looks at Saige> What she means is reconciling the guy she knows now with the first impression. <Saige nods> That’s exactly what I mean.
Boys:
<Seth looks at Sang> They say you’re known by the company you keep, right? Who here can honestly say they don’t think Aiden’s the shit?
Girls:
<the girls all nod, Aubrey smiles> The dealer with the heart of gold?
Boys:
<Van looks at Seth> Oh.. Aiden’s great. He’s very.. enigmatic. Almost larger than life.
Boys:
<Seth nods to Aubrey> Now riddle me this.. thinking about what we heard about Aiden getting shot in that alley and Samuel all but losing his shit because *he* was scared… <looks at them> How many of us think Aiden’s protecting *him* now?
Girls:
<Lia softly> I think that’s exactly what he’s doing.
Boys:
<Brennan nods> There’s no doubt those boys are tight as hell.
Girls:
<Sang nods>
Girls:
<Renee looks at Seth> That wouldn’t surprise me at all.
Boys:
<Seth looks at Lia, nods, looks at Ren> They’ve been through hell together. This is probably a cake walk for Aiden. And probably the *whole*fucking reason he’s here at all.
Girls:
<Saige looks at Seth> You’re probably right.
Boys:
<Loch smiles> So.. Aiden’s telling us all the stories that show us something completely different than what we saw in Matoaka.
Boys:
<Seth nods> And that Samuel’s a product of his environment.
Girls:
<Lia nods> And you all wouldn’t be having this issue if he were the exact opposite of what he is regardless of *where* he came from.
Boys:
<Ethan looks at Lia> What do you mean “the exact opposite of what he is “?
Boys:
<Brennan looks at Lia> What he is or what we’ve decided he is? Because I’m thinkin’ David pretty much told us we don’t have the first clue about that.
Girls:
<Lia looks at Ethan> If he didn’t have the stories.
Girls:
<Lia looks at Brennan> What we’ve decided he is.
Boys:
<Akhiro looks at the others> I think when we were sitting here talking about all the ways we were going to play nice, we should’ve come up with the idea that we should remember that before anything else, he *is* David’s brother. I think we forgot that. Or just didn’t want to remember.
Girls:
<Renee nods> I think we forgot that.
Boys:
<Loch shakes his head, looks at Lia> You know what? I’m thinkin’ it’s not even the stories. I’m thinkin’ if we hadn’t actually *seen* Matoaka for ourselves, the stories wouldn’t have had as much impact because we could’ve and probably would’ve not *really* believed it was quite *that* bad. Yanno?
Boys:
<Loch looks at Sang> It would’ve been more like reading a book or watching a moive. Or like listening to our parents talk about being our age once. You know they were, but you never *quite* believe it.
Girls:
<Sangria nods, shrugs> For me hearing *you* tell it was…<looks at him> I could tell something was off, that being there made you nervous.
Boys:
<Loch nods> And that’s the thing. The place made me nervous. Samuel didn’t or I wouldn’t have called him an asshole, yanno? <looks at Sang> I’m ballsy but I’m not stupid. And I did have you waitin’ at home for me.
Boys:
<Loch rolls his eyes> Hell, I told *Taryn* to call him an asshole, yanno? And he barely registered it.
Girls:
<Sangria nods> I was just.. too nervous for you to put that together.
Boys:
<Brennan looks at Loch and Sang> Yeah, but.. come on.. you can go to a bar you’ve never been to and get nervous just because it’s unfamiliar. How unfamiliar is this place for him? Think about it. What if Solitude is to him what Matoaka was to you guys?
Girls:
<Renee nods> And I think …<looks at Brennan> yes.
Boys:
<Akhiro nods> And for all the stories they’ve told us.. for everything we’ve learned about them.. *we* have yet to reciprocate. We’ve given them the bare minimum.
Boys:
<Loch nods to Akhiro> And here’s something else.. <looks at the others> How much of it is because Samuel’s scary and how much is because he’s David’s brother? And before everyone gets all self righteous about it.. until Friday night.. there were at least a couple of us that didn’t like Taryn bein’ with *David* at all. And before that, *no* one wanted him engaged to Saige. And not because *Saige* has a bad rep. You guys need to wake up. What you’re doin’ to Samuel since he got here is the same shit you guys used to do to David until recently and on a slightly larger scale.
Boys:
<Loch shrugs> The whole reason we did the show the way we did Friday was because we had to “convince” the non believers that David and Taryn was a good thing.
Girls:
<Renee nods> You’re right… So we reciprocate. Give them our stories.
Boys:
<Van looks at Ren> Yeah. The point being that’s how friendships and trust are built and maintained. People telling each other their stories. <looks at Loch> I don’t think *this* is about Samuel being David’s brother, but you’re dead ass right about the fact we used to do similar shit to David.

Girls:
<the girls nod, Siobhan nods> You guys are right.. so let’s build some friendships and see what we can do to repair any damage. <Aubrey nods> I think part of why we haven’t beyond the trust issue is because we’re afraid they’re gonna think we’re boring.
Boys:
<Tristan comes back to the table smiling, sits down, looks at everyone, stops smiling> Shit, what happened now?
Girls:
<Sang smiles> Oh.. I know I’m boring.
Boys:
<Akhiro looks at Aubrey> Oh, we’re totally boring in comparison. But we don’t know that they might actually appreciate boring considering everything they normally have to deal with.
Girls:
<Sangria looks at Tristan and gives him the rundown> What’re you grinnin’ about.
Boys:
<Tristan arches a brow> Wow. <looks at the others> You guys are assholes. <looks back at Sang> I’m smiling because they got distracted by the pool tables and they’re giving each other shit.. okay.. it’s not as funny in translation, but it’s pretty funny. <looks at the others again> You guys realize that I’m the kind of guy that guys like them are normally expected to be rolling in alleys, right? Did you know they know a guy who’s hair has more colors in it than Sang’s? And he’s an artist.. kinda emo. Okay.. very emo. And he’s one of their better friends? He’s the one that gave Aiden the ink. And the guy Aiden got the car from? AC/DC fanatic. Like.. hardcore. And they play pool regularly with some guy that’s part of like… the richest family in town but has a motorcycle, mad ink and is kind of the outcast in his family. <smiles> Then there are the gypsies.. they know fucking *gypsies*. Like.. honest to god, real life, gypsies. <looks at Sang> And if Taryn were here, I’d totally tell her about this because apparently, the gypsies raise Vanners.
Girls:
<Sang smiles> Cool. <Nods> We know we’re assholes.
Girls:
<Saige nods> Taryn went outside.
Girls:
<Aubrey looks at Brennan> Pool?
Boys:
<Tristan looks at Sang> I thought *you* at least would be totally turned on by the gypsy thing.
Girls:
<Sangria smiles> I am.. and I’m totally plannin on askin’ them about ’em when they get back to the table.
Boys:
<Tristan laughs> Don’t bother asking Aiden. He acts like horses carry the plague or something.
Boys:
<Brennan nods to Aubrey> Sure. <smiles> So much for drunk truth of dare.
Girls:
<Renee smiles> Fuck that we’ll all go and play in there while we play pool. <looks at Akhiro>
Boys:
<Akhiro looks at Ren> You’re going to play pool?
Girls:
<Renee blinks> Right.. I don’t know how to play. <grins> So I’ll watch *you*.
Boys:
<Seth smiles> I’m gonna play pool. <looks at Lia>
Boys:
<Akhiro laughs> No time like the present to learn.
Girls:
<Lia nods> I’ll play.
Boys:
<Seth smiles again> Yeah, see.. I was just thinking about the last time we were around a pool table.
Girls:
<Renee smiles>
Girls:
<Saige blinks> There’s a story.
Boys:
<Seth looks at Saige> And I was thinking that, too.
Girls:
<Lia smiles>
Girls:
<Saige grins> I think *Lia* should tell it.
Boys:
<Seth smiles, looks at Lia> Think you could handle that?
Girls:
<Lia blinks> I can try. <Smiles> You guys can take over… when I can’t.
Boys:
<Seth nods> All right.
Girls:
<Sangria smiles> Who’s gonna go get David and Tar?
Boys:
<Loch looks at Sang> We’re gonna let David and Taryn talk and not get in the way. They’ll find us.
Girls:
<Sangria looks at Loch, smiles playfully> Yes sir.
Boys:
<Loch smiles> Come on. Let’s grab the bottles and the shot glasses and make it a drinking game.
Girls:
<Sangria stands and grabs bottles and as many glasses as she can carry.
Boys:
<the boys follow suit and head to the pool tables>
Girls:
<Saige walks over and hops on the edge of the pool table>
Boys:
<Aiden and Samuel are fucking with each other over the pool game, look over when the others some in, Samuel looks at Saige, Aiden smiles> Oh, shit. Guess we got distracted.
Boys:
<meanwhile, outside>

Boys:
<David goes outside after Taryn> Taryn…
Girls:
<Taryn leans against the wall, looks over> Yeah.
Boys:
<David walks over to her> I’m sorry. I didn’t know I was gonna go off like that.
Girls:
<Taryn shakes her head> Don’t you dare apologize for that. <looks at him> I know it’s been hard for you to keep quiet about everything… and I’m the one that should apologize.
Boys:
<David shake his head> Baby, I didn’t even know I was thinkin’ most of that til it came out.
Girls:
<Taryn looks at him> It’s okay. It needed to be said. And I did talk to Saige today. I’m sorry. <shakes her head>
Boys:
<David looks at her> Sorry for what?
Girls:
<Taryn quietly> That we’ve made it hard for you and for him.
Boys:
<David shakes his head> I’ve been worryin’ more about it bein’ hard for you.
Girls:
<Taryn looks at him> That I went behind your back and talked to Saige.. but the more time I spend with them… the less nervous I get.
Girls:
<Taryn quietly> After we ate and everything.. I felt almost at ease.
Boys:
<David leans against the wall next to her, reaches over and takes her hand, looks at her> My family’s fucked up. I know that. And I know it wasn’t really fair to you to drag you into all that shit. I knew goin’ into this that you and Saige were a package deal. You didn’t have that kind of understanding. Hell.. you didn’t even know he existed.
Girls:
<Taryn shakes her head, squeezes his hand> And you and your family are a package deal too.. and any more that happen to come around. Baby.. I love you and your family is part of you.. and If we have to build a house for every one of them on the property so be it.. I’ll even buy the next ranch over if I have to.
Boys:
<David shakes his head> I’m thinkin’ my family would rather buy their own places. <looks at her> But I get what you’re sayin’. Tary.. *you’re* my family, too, now. You’re the one I’m plannin’ on spendin’ the rest of my life with. I don’t wanna lose that. I don’t want anything to fuck that up.
Girls:
<Taryn smiles at him> Baby, I’m not gonna let anything fuck it up. I *want* to spend the rest of my life with you. I want to have your kids and sit on the porch and watch our grand kids play with the horses. <looks over at him, her eyes on his> I love you. I have since the first time I saw you. <quietly> More then that I need you…you make me feel whole.
Boys:
<David smiles> I don’t know about all of that, but.. I know my life is shit without you. Always has been. And honestly, the only reason I give a fuck about what Samuel’s doin’ or who his friends are is because I’m worryin’ about you and how you’re feelin’ about it.

Girls:
<Taryn looks at him> Here’s the thing and you know this.. new people.. make me jittery. I *know* you won’t let anything happen to me and if you thought for one second I was in danger you’d’ve kicked them both. I *didn’t* realize that until we were sitting at dinner. <smiles> That’s when I felt less nervous.
Boys:
<David smiles> Now let me tell you what you *don’t* know. Samuel likes you. He says you’re a good girl and *he’s* tellin’ me not to fuck this up.
Girls:
<Taryn smiles> He does? Really? <shakes her head> I thought he’d make me work for that. <smiles brighter>
Boys:
<David smiles> You sayin’ you haven’t?
Girls:
<Taryn smiles> I guess I have. <looks at him> I’m surprised he didn’t make me prove myself.
Boys:
<David shakes his head> Maybe he figured you already have. <looks at her> He’s fucked up, Tary, and his life is fucked up and guys like him don’t get girls like you. They get girls like Saige for quickies in the backseat before they move on to the guy they *really* want. They get strippers, girls like Aubrey. And girls like that can’t do for a guy what you do for me. Hell.. most girls like you wouldn’t give *me* the time of day, either. But you’re special. Anyone can see that.
Girls:
<Taryn shakes her head> I’m not.. <smiles> I just spent ten years trying to get over you only to realize I didn’t have to. <shrugs> I didn’t *want* to.
Boys:
<David smiles> I’m okay with that.
Boys:
<David looks at her> And yeah.. you are.
Girls:
<Taryn shakes her head, smiling> I’m just me, David.
Boys:
<David nods> Yeah, you are. <shrugs> Guess that means somethin’ different to me than it does to you.
Girls:
<Taryn smiles> Tell me what it means to you?
Boys:
<David looks at her> Everything, Tary. Everything good I ever had in my life, or have, was and is you.
Boys:
<David shrugs> No one else could do that for me. And I think I went through enough women to be pretty sure about that.
Girls:
<Taryn looks up at him, her eyes sparkling with tears>
Boys:
<David smiles, quietly> I love you.
Girls:
<Taryn smiles, softly> I love you, too.

Boys:
<David leans over and kisses her, pulls back, smiles> You ready to go back in and deal with these fucknuts?
Girls:
<Taryn smiles, kisses him back> Yeah. Let’s go deal with the…<laughs>fucknuts.
Girls:
<Taryn grins> and I can’t think of a more apt term.
Boys:
<David smiles, takes her hand, pushes away from the wall and goes back inside>
