Finding Happiness in Misery – Truth or Dare Part 2, The World Shifts

Boys:
<Ethan walks outside, stops seeing Lia and Van, arches a brow, laughs> You have *got* to be shitting me.
Girls:
<Lia breaks the kiss and looks over at Ethan>
Boys:
<Van looks over at Ethan, breathes> Shit.
Boys:
<Ethan smiles> Can I just say.. wow?
Boys:
<Van shakes his head> How about you just don’t say anything. <takes Ethan’s cigarettes, lights one and hands them back>
Boys:
<Ethan lights a cigarette, offers Lia the pack> No problem.
Girls:
<Lia looks at Ethan, takes the pack, quietly> Thank you. <fishes one out, and hands Ethan the pack back> Sorry.
Boys:
<Van takes a drag, looks at Ethan> What are you doing out here anyway?
Boys:
<Ethan smiles at Lia> For what? <looks at Van> Just taking a breath. <takes the pack back> Taryn, who I thought was safe, dared Sang to kiss a dude.. toes and all that.. and Sang picked me. And.. now I’m out here breathing because it’s really hot in there.
Boys:
<Van smiles> Which is pretty much the same reason we came out here.
Boys:
<Ethan nods, takes a drag> So you feel me.
Boys:
<Van nods> Yeah.

Girls:
<Lia looks at Van, then at Ethan> We feel you.
Boys:
<Ethan smiles at Lia> So.. you guys ever going back in or is that prospect just getting more awkward the longer you’re out here?
Boys:
<Van smiles> Um.. how long *have* we been out here?
Girls:
<Lia looks at Ethan> Long enough that other stuff is distracting them?
Boys:
<Ethan smiles again> Fuck if I know. One second I’m thoroughly being felt up by Saige’s amazing fucking hair and the next I’m staring down the barrel of Sang’s lips.
Boys:
<Ethan looks at Lia> On my way out, Sang was daring Tristan to kiss a girl.. any girl.. the way you kissed Van. So.. probably not.
Girls:
<Lia shakes her head> That one was a giveaway.
Boys:
<Van looks at Lia> What do you mean?
Boys:
<Ethan shakes his head> Babe.. I didn’t even see it. I was totally distracted.
Girls:
<Lia smiles> When we played back home if anyone “gave away” a dare they had to do the dare themselves. A giveaway is when you make the dare intentionally easy. Rule of thumb is 2/3 of the people playing have to agree it was a giveaway.
Girls:
<Lia looks at Van> The same applies for a giveaway truth.
Boys:
<Ethan arches a brow> We do that shit all the time. Hell, I just did that to Taryn.
Boys:
<Van looks kind of confused> So.. what was the give away? The dare for Tristan?
Girls:
<Lia nods> Well yeah.. She gave him the same dare I had, most likely *knowing* he’d pick Nikki.
Boys:
<Ethan looks at Lia, arches a brow> So..if someone called her out on that, she’d have to do the same dare she gave Tristan?
Girls:
<Lia nods> Yes.
Boys:
<Ethan nods> So.. we’ll stay out here a bit longer then. <looks at Lia> Does it count as a giveaway if it’s a recycled dare? Like everyone daring each other the same thing?
Boys:
<Van shakes his head> That particular dare is getting recycled because we want to see who the person we’re daring picks.
Girls:
<Lia nods> I’m thinking it does. The thing about truth or dare is it’s not supposed to be easy. We made that rule because people were doing things like I dare you to to run outside yell and come back. or for truths Is the sky blue? It’s supposed to be hard.
Boys:
<Ethan nods> Well.. we’re giving easy ones to Samuel and Bree because we don’t know them well enough and vice versa to be comfortable with us. And we don’t want to piss them off or cause problems between them. David and Taryn is because Taryn gets uncomfortable easily and she and David are married and *no one* wants to be the asshole that dared one of the newlyweds to make out with someone else if they can help it. And by make out I really mean.. the lap dance or something. Taryn would be mortified. And that’s not fun for anyone.
Boys:
<Ethan smiles> It’s why Van was giving you easy ones at the bar.

Girls:
<Lia smiles, looks at Van> It is?
Boys:
<Van smiles> Well, yeah. I didn’t want to hit you with.. consider it a “no list” of sorts.
Girls:
<Lia nods> All right.
Boys:
<Ethan nods> When you get more used to us and you’re a little more relaxed and know us well enough to know we’re not dickheads, then we’ll start giving you wilder shit.
Girls:
<Lia smiles> I can understand that.
Boys:
<Van smiles> I wouldn’t put you in a position that made you *that* uncomfortable and you might find humiliating.
Boys:
<Ethan nods> And neither would the rest of us.
Girls:
<Lia looks at Ethan> I don’t know there’s a good chance that when Seth finds out about that kiss… he’ll pull up stakes and we’ll be back in DC. <smiles at Van>
Boys:
<Ethan smiles> We’re kind of feeling out your limits and shit.
Boys:
<Van looks at Lia> Yeah.. I don’t know about that.
Girls:
<Lia smiles at Ethan> I understand. <looks at Van> You don’t?
Boys:
<Van nods, takes a long drag> Well, with the Ex being involved and all.
Girls:
<Lia looks at Van, nods> All right.
Boys:
<Van looks at her>
Boys:
<Ethan watches them, taking a drag of his cigarette> Wow. At least I was smart enough to dodge the bullet.
Boys:
<Van looks at Ethan> What do you mean?
Boys:
<Ethan shrugs> I knew if she kissed me in anything remotely resembling “toe curling”, I was going to be outted so hard it’s not even funny. And I don’t know… things might get weird after that. Besides.. when and *if* we ever.. go there… I’d kind of like it to *not* be a dare in front of god and everyone. I’d like it to be.. yanno.. real.
Boys:
<Van shakes his head, rubs the back of his neck, mutters> Felt pretty “real” to me.
Girls:
<Lia smiles> Felt real to me too.
Boys:
<Van looks at Lia, smiles>
Boys:
<Ethan smiles, shakes his head> You guys are screwed. <takes a drag>
Girls:
<Lia looks at Ethan, quietly> He has the same lips you do.
Boys:
<Ethan looks at Lia, arches a brow> Um… thanks, but.. <looks at Van>
Boys:
<Van smiles> But his hair’s prettier.
Boys:
<Ethan takes a hard drag of his cigarette, flicks it> And I’m out.
Boys:
<Ethan heads back inside before Lia starts feeling up *his* face>
Boys:
<Van looks at Lia, smiles> You did that on purpose.
Girls:
<Lia looks at Van, smiles innocently> Who me?
Boys:
<Van laughs> Yes, you. <smiles> So… do we sneak back in?
Girls:
<Lia nods> I think I can handle what they’ve got.
Boys:
<Van looks at her> Yeah. I’m pretty sure you can.
Girls:
<Lia smiles> Van, Thank you.
Boys:
<Van takes a hard drag of his cigarette, finishing it, flicks it> For what?
Girls:
<Lia smiles> Talking me into this. I really am having a good time.
Boys:
<Van looks at her, smiles> I’m a bad influence.
Girls:
<Lia lays her hand on his arm> I could have kept saying no.
Boys:
<Van holds her look for a second, takes a breath> I’m really glad you didn’t.
Girls:
<Lia softly> Me too. <smiles> I’m really glad I got that dare.
Boys:
<Van shakes his head> I almost didn’t go with that one. <looks at her> Lia.. can I say something here that might not exactly be appropriate?
Girls:
<Lia looks at Van, quietly> We’ve passed inappropriate. Yes.
Boys:
<Van nods> Good point. <takes another breath> I think it’s unrealistic of Seth to think he can keep you in some kind of morally rigid bubble. <looks at her> All things considered, I mean… lines blur even for the best of us.. sometimes they get crossed. It’s natural when you start.. what I mean is.. the only way to keep you unchanged is to keep you locked away from the world and that’s just not possible.
Girls:
<Lia looks at Van> My morals are exactly that. And for them to change means I’m changing. <smiles> Seth will either like it or he won’t, if he doesn’t then he still has those papers, Van. And You’re right it is unfair of him to expect me to stay morally rigid. It means I’m not growing as a person. <shrugs> And for the first part of our marriage he was sleeping with other women. He kept that from me. He has no right to preach to me about morality. I love him. He’s my husband. But honestly Van, <quietly> There are times when I feel more…close..connected to you.
Boys:
<Van looks at her, quietly> Lia.. Seth is my best friend and I would *never* say or do anything.. intentionally… the rock the boat that is your marriage no matter what I think because what I think or what anyone else thinks.. all that matters is what the two of you think. And that you’re happy. < takes a breath > I just have a hell of a hard time believing you’re happy.

Girls:
<Lia looks down> I am.. usually.. most of the time. Now. Now that I don’t have to worry about him sleeping with other women. <looks back at him> Van, do you remember my no list?
Boys:
<Van nods> Of course.
Girls:
<Lia softly> Do you know *why* those specific things are on it?
Boys:
<Van looks at her> The things you’ll only do with your husband? I was assuming because you consider them sacrosanct.
Girls:
<Lia looks at him> Because they’re the most intimate things I can give him. You know what I realized the other day?
Boys:
<Van looks at her, quietly> What?
Girls:
<Lia holds his look> Those women he’s with…they do the same things and there’s *nothing* I can have that’s just for us.
Boys:
<Van looks at her> But it’s more than that, isn’t it? I mean.. it’s not *just* the women, Lia. It’s *you*. I just.. I can’t see you thriving under his kind of dictatorship. And that’s probably a shitty way to say it, but… he’s so uncompromising. It just seems like sometimes, he focuses more on *his* happiness than yours. I mean.. where’s the give and take?
Boys:
<Van shakes his head> And if I’m wrong, tell me, but I’m not counting the material things you *want*. <looks at her> I’m not looking at the house and the dog. I’m looking at the emotional things you *need*.
Girls:
<Lia looks at him, shakes her head> I don’t know. It’s there sometimes. I mean I needed this move. I didn’t realize it but I did.
Boys:
<Van nods> All right. <rubs the back of his neck> I said way too much as it is.
Girls:
<Lia looks at him> Van.. you didn’t. It’s all right. He’s your best friend.. You’re mine. I’m glad you.. we can talk like this. <quietly> You balance out the emotional, Van.
Boys:
<Van looks at her> You mean a lot to me, Lia. More than you probably realize.
Girls:
<Lia smiles> You mean a lot to me too.
Girls:
<Lia softly> If anyone could inspire me to cheat…it’s you, Van.
Boys:
<Van shakes his head> Have you ever heard the phrase “anything you have to cheat to have, you come to resent”?
Girls:
<Lia nods> I have.. which is why I wouldn’t.
Girls:
<Lia grins> I *will* keep playing Truth or dare though.
Boys:
<Van looks at her> I don’t know how true it is.. but you’re the one person I wouldn’t test it with. *Because* you’re the last person I want to feel that way about.
Boys:
<Van smiles> It’s not cheating if it’s a dare?
Girls:
<Lia nods> Exactly. Isn’t that the precedent that was set at the first game?
Boys:
<Van nods> Yeah, I guess it was. <looks down the street> And Seth says it’s not cheating if there’s a camera crew. In the meantime, I can’t even figure out what it qualifies as, I just know for a relationship to work there has to be compromise and it’s something I’m willing to compromise on.
Girls:
<Lia nods> And Saige is very lucky.. <smiles> And very understanding.
Boys:
<Van nods> Yes, she is. <looks at her> Understanding, I mean.
Girls:
<Lia smiles> In some ways I wish I could be more like that.
Boys:
<Van looks at her curiously> More understanding?
Girls:
<Lia nods> More like her. Freer, understanding, <shrugs> You know.
Boys:
<Van shakes his head> Lia.. don’t wish that. <looks at her> You’re perfect just the way you are.
Girls:
<Lia shakes her head> Van, I spent *months* after I found out about the porn stuff.. trying to figure out why I wasn’t enough. Thinking if I was everything he said I was to him why did he need to do that.
Boys:
<Van shakes his head> Lia.. that’s not *you*. <looks at her> That’s all him. I know you both have the same traditional values, but there’s more to sharing values then just agreeing on your roles in the relationship.
Girls:
<Lia quietly sighs> I know. I also know he’ll *never* sign the papers. And I’m not really sure I want him to now. <shakes her head>
Boys:
<Van looks at her curiously> What do you mean? I didn’t think you *really* wanted him to before.
Girls:
<Lia shakes her head> I didn’t. I wanted him to see what he was doing to us, to our vows.
Boys:
<Van nods> What if he would sign the papers? <looks at her> I mean.. what if he could actually be convinced to? What would you do then?
Girls:
<Lia shakes her head> I don’t know. Cry on your shoulder?
Boys:
<Van nods> It’s just a hypothetical.
Girls:
<Lia quietly> He’s not coming back here tonight is he?
Boys:
<Van looks at her, hesitates, shakes his head> Probably not.
Girls:
<Lia nods> All right. Thank you.
Boys:
<Van nods>
Boys:
<Van rakes a hand through his hair, looks down the road>
Girls:
<Lia frown watching him> What is it?
Boys:
<Van shakes his head> Nothing. <looks at her> I mean.. I was just thinking about how different it looks out here when you’re.. under the influence.
Girls:
<Lia shakes her head> Try again. Did I say something that made you.. uncomfortable?
Boys:
<Van smiles, shakes his head> Lia… you didn’t do anything. I’ve just got a lot on my mind with work.
Girls:
<Lia smiles> Van the only other time I’ve seen you pull your hand through your hair was when I said I’d fuck you.. the night I met Saige.
Boys:
<Van laughs> Oh, my god.
Girls:
<Lia smiles when he laughs>
Boys:
<Van smiles> I’d like to say that when you and Seth were challenging each other back and forth, I had wholly selfish motivations for encouraging that.
Girls:
<Lia smiles> Did you? I can’t imagine why?
Boys:
<Van arches a brow> You can’t? <smiles> Right.
Girls:
<Lia laughs> Van.. I fully expected you to squash it right there.
Boys:
<Van smiles> And I totally would have under completely normal circumstances.
Girls:
<Lia smiles> Those weren’t normal and I *still* didn’t make my point.
Boys:
<Van looks at her> Those weren’t normal because normally I don’t *want* to hook up with my friend’s significant others.
Girls:
<Lia looks at Van> Do you know what he told me when we left?
Boys:
<Van shakes his head> No.
Girls:
<Lia shrugs> That it wasn’t happening again.
Boys:
<Van nods> And I figured it was a one shot deal when it came up in the first place.
Girls:
<Lia looks at him> I did too.
Boys:
<Van looks at her> That’s why I didn’t squash it. I wasn’t about to miss the opportunity.
Girls:
<Lia looks down, softly> I’m not so sure now.
Boys:
<Van hesitates> About what?
Girls:
<Lia still quietly> It happening again.
Boys:
<Van furrows his brow> Wait.. just to make sure you’re saying what I think you’re saying… you’re not sure it was a one shot deal?
Girls:
<Lia nods>
Boys:
<Van nods, shoves his hands into his pockets> Because…..?
Girls:
<Lia quietly> Because it totally would have.
Boys:
<Van looks at her>
Girls:
<Lia looks up at him> In there.
Boys:
<Van nods> Yeah. I totally would’ve been all over it, too.
Girls:
<Lia nods> And I don’t think it was just the Ex.
Boys:
<Van shakes his head> I know it wasn’t for me.
Boys:
<Van shrugs> The Ex just makes it harder to say no.
Girls:
<Lia looks at him, smiles> Is that why you wanted me to try it?
Boys:
<Van looks at her> If I say yes, I’ll sound like a complete bastard.
Girls:
<Lia smiles again> No you won’t. Because I know you aren’t.
Boys:
<Van shakes his head> No.. that’s not why I wanted you to try it. I just.. I wanted you to have the experience. <shrugs again> The rest is just bonus.
Girls:
<Lia smiles> It felt good.
Boys:
<Van smiles, nods> It does.
Girls:
<Lia quietly, moves toward him again>
Boys:
<Van looks at her, steps toward her, taking her face in his hands and kisses her again, more urgently this time>
Girls:
<Lia kisses him back, with the same urgency, one hand on his chest the other hand grasps one of his wrists before sliding up his arm>
