Dancing Slowly in an Empty Room – Another Secret, Bree Talks to Samuel

Girls:
<Taryn looks over at David, when they’re out and far enough away> That was weird.
Boys:
<David looks over at Taryn> That why you wanted to leave so suddenly?
Girls:
<Taryn nods> partly. I also think she’s got more.
Boys:
<David looks at her curiously> More about what?
Girls:
<Taryn looks at David> That question was pretty random for her and kind of deep.
Boys:
<David nods> And you don’t think it was about him shootin’ Hank.

Girls:
<Taryn looks at him> Do you?
Boys:
<David looks at her> And that he told her somethin’ that was one of those things he wouldn’t tell *us* because he knows there’s some shit we just don’t wanna know. <shrugs> I don’t know. I mean.. she didn’t *seem* like she was lyin’ about it.
Girls:
<Taryn nods and looks back at Saige’s house> Would we necessarily *know* when she was lying?
Boys:
<David smiles> I figure if either of us would, it’d be you. You musta seen or heard *somethin’* to make you suspicious.
Girls:
<Taryn frowns> It was just the way she was so… out there with it.. you know. You *didn’t* ask. And she blurted it right out there and Saige is probably the best secret keeper we’ve got around here.
Girls:
<Taryn smiles> Next to you of course.
Boys:
<David smiles, nods> Then it must be a hell of a secret.
Girls:
<Taryn nods>
Boys:
<David looks at Taryn> So.. he did somethin’ horrifying for the right reasons. Possibly.
Girls:
<Taryn nods> Probably.
Boys:
<David shakes his head> That doesn’t give us shit to go on.
Girls:
<Taryn blinks> Something *Saige* considers horrifying.
Boys:
<David nods> Right. But not so horrifying that the “right reasons” can’t make it right.
Boys:
<David looks at her> And he trusted her with it.
Girls:
<Taryn nods> He did.. and she’s not gonna break that trust.
Boys:
<David nods> Right. But that also means it’s somethin’ that doesn’t set so well with him either.
Boys:
<David looks at her> And you gotta wonder what’s so bad that even Samuel can’t shake it off.
Girls:
<Taryn frowns> Yeah. So what would be so bad that Samuel can’t shake it off.
Boys:
<David shakes his head> Fuck if I know.
Boys:
<David smiles slowly> Wait….
Girls:
<Taryn looks at him> Yeah?
Boys:
<David looks at her> It’d have to be somethin’ she knew about already, right? Somethin’ that’s come up since we were in Matoaka. Because why tell someone somethin’ that’s so bad if they don’t already know somethin’ about it? You’d just keep it to yourself because you wouldn’t wanna give them somethin’ *more* to hold against you.
Girls:
<Taryn nods> Right.
Boys:
<David nods> So.. what’s the worst thing that’s come up since Matoaka? Because if it’s bad enough to hang over Samuel with everything he saw and did there.. it’s gotta be the worst thing. Or close to it.
Girls:
<Taryn looks at him> For me it would be the attic.
Boys:
<David nods> And Hank. Because he lied about what happened there.
Girls:
<Taryn nods> Yeah.. that would be bad.. but.. he came clean to us on that one..didn’t he?
Boys:
<David nods> And the attic took longer. A lot longer.
Boys:
<David shrugs> Hell.. the attic even shook up Jamie.
Girls:
<Taryn nods> Yeah it did. In a huge way. So what do we know about the attic?
Boys:
<David lights a cigarette, takes a drag thinking> Well.. we know it was filled with the bodies of the family before and some of the bikers that got taken out while they were takin’ the house.
Girls:
<Taryn nods> And there were children in that family.
Boys:
<David looks at her> And we know Saige asked Samuel if he had anything to do with that.
Girls:
<Taryn nods> Right.
Boys:
<David stops and looks at her>
Girls:
<Taryn turns to him when he stops> You think he did have something to do with it?
Boys:
<David looks at her pointedly> You remember how he responded when she asked?
Girls:
<Taryn shakes her head> I remember he said no.
Boys:
<David smirks> Not right away.
Girls:
<Taryn nods> Right.. he hesitated.
Boys:
<David shakes his head> Think, Tary. <looks at her> He did that thing Conrad told us about.
Girls:
<Taryn blinks> He lied.
Boys:
<David nods> And looked her right in the eye like he was darin’ her to call him a liar while he was doin’ it.
Girls:
<Taryn shakes her head> Shit.
Boys:
<David shakes his head, starts walking again> Son of a bitch.
Girls:
<Taryn starts walking with him, stops> Wait…
Boys:
<David stops when she does, looks at her> What?
Girls:
<Taryn looks at him> Whatever he did Saige believes it was for the right reasons…right?
Boys:
<David nods>
Girls:
<Taryn quietly> We can’t ask him.. because that’ll be throwing Saige under the bus even though she didn’t actually tell us anything. So what could be so heinous, yet right, that he can’t get past it and it bothered Saige enough to give us a hypothetical. Because that’s her way of letting us know without throwing *him* under that bus. You know?
Boys:
<David nods> I kinda had that feelin’. Whatever it was… <shakes his head, looks toward the main house> We saw what those boys did to that town. Imagine what a handful of ’em drunk would do to one house, one family, one man with one gun.
Girls:
<Taryn shakes her head> I wouldn’t want to be the women or girls in that family.
Boys:
<David nods> And you heard what happened to the wife. <looks at her> He kept her around til he got bored with her.

Girls:
<Taryn nods> Yeah… <shudders> and we know what he did to your mom..
Boys:
<David nods>
Boys:
<David looks at her, arches a brow> He didn’t tell us what happened to the kids, Tar. All he said about that was he doesn’t shoot anything he’s gotta lower his aim to hit. Matter of fact.. he really didn’t say much about the kids at all.
Girls:
<Taryn nods> He didn’t. <frowns>
Boys:
<David nods> He didn’t really tell us about any of ’em *but* the mom.
Girls:
<Taryn looks at David> What do you think that means?
Boys:
<David shakes his head> That he didn’t wanna give us so much information that he couldn’t play off not actually bein’ there.
Boys:
<David looks at her> But I shoulda known that was bullshit. That Hank would let him sit somethin’ like that out.
Girls:
<Taryn nods> No.. A guy like Hank would have gotten everyone involved. Simply to cover all his bases.
Boys:
<David nods> And his boy especially. Make him a man.
Girls:
<Taryn nods> And if the leader took Mom…<shakes her head, quietly> What does that leave Samuel with?
Boys:
<David looks at her> They don’t do it like that, Taryn. Hank already had a woman. Mom was just sport.
Girls:
<Taryn nods> Okay.. still Mom was sport for Hank. <looks at David> I’m assuming the men at this point are gone…
Boys:
<David shakes his head> I doubt it. They’d’ve been there for *hours*, Taryn. That’s their idea of a party.
Girls:
<Taryn nods> Leaving the women and children for the men to fuck with at will.
Boys:
<David looks at her> And I seriously doubt mom was sport for *just* Hank. They run trains on girls comin’ into the club.
Girls:
<Taryn nods> Okay… so mom dealt with that. <sighs> I’m almost wishing I saw what was in that attic…<shakes her head>
Boys:
<David shakes his head> And if you had, you’d be sayin’ you wished you hadn’t.
Girls:
<Taryn nods> I’m pretty sure if I had I’d not be sleepin’.
Boys:
<David nods> And I’m thinkin’ Samuel hasn’t been doin’ much of that, either.
Girls:
<Taryn nods> More since he came here…according to Saige anyway.
Boys:
<David nods, takes a drag, looks toward the main house> Are we sure we even *want* to know what happened in that house, Tary?
Girls:
<Taryn shakes her head> No…
Boys:
<David looks at her> What if we’ve been goin’ about this all wrong?
Girls:
<Taryn looks at him> What do you mean?
Boys:
<David shakes his head> We spent all this time worryin’ about figurin’ him out, tryin’ to understand him, tryin’ to explain where he’s been to everyone else… <looks at her> What if that’s not what he needs? What if he just needs to feel human again?
Boys:
<David shrugs> What if the problem isn’t his head, but his soul?
Girls:
<Taryn blinks, quietly> It’d be my problem if I lived through somethin’ like that. I’d feel…dirty.
Boys:
<David nods> And I’m thinkin’ that’s an understatement.
Girls:
<Taryn nods> So how do we… help him?

Boys:
<David looks at her> And we bring him here where we all damn near sparkle in comparison and the worst we’ve done is broken someone’s heart. <shakes his head> I’m not sure yet.

Girls:
<Taryn nods> Which makes him stand out in comparison and feel worse… So maybe some of our not so sparkly stories..
Boys:
<David smiles> Baby, the worst we’ve got is Loch fuckin’ around on Sang with Saige. I’m thinkin’ stories aren’t gonna do it.
Girls:
<Taryn nods> Okay.. Damn.. David.
Boys:
<David looks at her> What?
Girls:
<Taryn quietly> I just really want him to be comfortable and like it here. I want to get to know him and be close, I want him around our kids and stuff.
Boys:
<David nods> So.. what would we do if he was a war vet?
Girls:
<Taryn shakes her head> Get him talking about it.. make life as normal as possible for him.. which he’s doing on his own too.
Boys:
<David nods> For him to talk about it, we’ve gotta be able to hear it and then let it go. <looks at her> But he told Saige about it. Maybe that could be enough.
Girls:
<Taryn nods> I hope it is for him.. because I don’t see him lettin’ that one out again.. you know.
Boys:
<David nods> We’ll figure it out, Tary. This one I’m just gonna need a little time on.
Boys:
<David looks at her> In the meantime… what you were sayin’ about makin’ life as normal as possible.. that’s where we should start.
Girls:
<Taryn nods> And we’re doin’ that. <smiles> I think.
Boys:
<David smiles> I’m thinkin’. The routine can’t be hurtin’.
Boys:
<David shrugs> And I’m thinkin’ him wantin’ to spend that money on somethin’ of his own.. somethin’ real, solid and lasting.. says a whole lot.
Girls:
<Taryn smiles> That.. <nods> And him driving Saige to help with Achilles.
Boys:
<David smiles> We takin’ bets on *her* jumpin’ the fence and movin’ in over there?
Girls:
<Taryn smiles> I’m not countin’ it out.
Boys:
<David laughs> Seriously. <takes her hand and starts toward the main house>
Girls:
<Taryn looks at him> Who knows maybe they’ll be good for each other..more than they already are.
Boys:
<David looks at her> Considerin’ that Saige has never really been the jump on your back kind of girl.. I’m thinkin’ you might be right.
Girls:
<Taryn smiles> And she has…loosened up a bit..not just with him but everyone.
Boys:
<David nods> She seems a little less balls out, too.
Girls:
<Taryn looks at him> She does…like she’s thinking more?
Boys:
<David smiles> Just the fact he can call her “princess” and she doesn’t blow a gasket is pretty damn impressive. <nods> Yeah. And like she’s finally slowin’ down a little.
Girls:
<Taryn nods and smiles> Exactly. I can tell you I think if she wasn’t with Van.. she’d be all about Samuel.
Boys:
<David laughs> Ya think? <smiles> You see the look on her face when I said he was gonna be stickin’ around a while?
Girls:
<Taryn nods> Oh my *god*… what *was* that?

Boys:
<David smiles, shakes his head> I’m not sure, but if I had to guess.. <looks at her, smiles again> I’d say it’s the way you used to look when we were first together and you were thinkin’ about me.
Girls:
<Taryn blinks, smiles, shakes her head> Christ.
Boys:
<David laughs> Am I right?
Girls:
<Taryn nods> Probably..
Boys:
<David smiles again> Huh.
Girls:
<Taryn smiles> Huh?
Boys:
<David smiles more broadly, leans over and kisses her while they’re walking>
Girls:
<Taryn kisses him back>
